costs bobby pa his job as head coach of arkansas razorbacks team. we have his text messages by the thousands from before when the school sent him packing and a lot of people steal shampoo from hotels. but who takes the curtains, the paintings? even a television? but first from fox this friday night, somebody could face criminal charges for the las vegas getaway that cost taxpayers more than $800,000. congressional sources are now telling fox news the general services administration or g.s.a.'s inspector general is asking the justice department to investigate that spending spree. and now, lawmakers have released e-mails, e-mails that show g.s.a. officials knew about the scandal months before the story broke. and they apparently had concerns about the guy who organized the vegas shindig. but he's still got a bonus of $9,000.

week long conference at the palm springs riviera resort and spa in may of 2010. if that wasn't generous enough, managers essentially allowed the intern to pocket their per day food allowance by classifying a $100 a person buffet as light refreshments. some of those interns reportedly stayed in suites that the resort describes as "opulent." republican congressman john micah of florida says "g.s.a. has been spreading the taxpayers wealth, providing luxurious junkets not only for high level executives but for interns as well. we also now have new numbers that contradict the obama administration's initial reaction to the scandal. the same thing happened during the bush years. the white house claimed one g.s.a. conference in 2006 saw spending go up more than 240% when in fact --

>> so this will never happen again? >> the congressman called it a blatant waste of taxpayer money that appears to have no end. >> shepard: dan springer live in seattle. north korea right now is facing a harsh backlash over its decision to go ahead with yesterday's humiliating rocket launch. the white house today announced as punishment, it has officially canceled plans to send 240,000 tons of food aid. and the united nations is said to be working on a response of its own. as you know, news of the launch broke during this newscast last evening. of course, we now know the rocket blew up shortly after liftoff and crashed into the yellow sea. but the white house and many analysts still claim it was just a cover for a missile test. and that it was a violation of a long list of global agreements. >> given their willingness to

drop international negotiations and move ahead with a launch that was clearly a violation of u.n. security council resolutions that we don't feel we can move forward at any level including at the nutritional assistance level because we don't feel that we can frankly trust the north koreans that this will end up in appropriate hands. >> shepard: in other words, starving north koreans will most likely the ones to pay the price. brainwashed citizens who in some cases reportedly have to eat grass and tree bark to survive. the military recently had to lower the minimum requirement height for its soldiers to 4'9" with a large part of the north korean children are reportedly permanently stunted from starvation but the concern now is the communist regime could soon hold a nuclear test in an attempt to save face and flex its military might. greg palkot is in north korea's capital with the latest tonight and we'll join him shortly as satellite conditions permit. well, an extreme weather alert

first and what forecasters are now saying will be a very rough day tomorrow. we'll have all the details on tomorrow's very difficult afternoon which is expected in the midwest. but almost three years after he supposedly had just months to live, the lockerbie bomber is in the hospital tonight. that's according to his brother who says the bomber is getting a blood transfusion. the united kingdom sent him back to libya in august of 2009 after doctors said he was dying of prostate cancer. he was convicted of the 1988 bombing of pan am flight 103 over lockerbie, scotland. the attack killed 259 people, most of them americans. the white house says the united states will increase what it calls nonlethal aid to opposition forces in syria. that includes items like medicine, communication equipment but apparently, no weapons. and we're told the white house ruled out unilateral military action in syria.

meantime, it's syria -- it's day two in syria of the cease-fire between syrian troops and the opposition but world leaders are openly questioning the motives of the syrian president. the cease-fire is largely held but there were some skirmishes today. protesters put the troops to the test with a large demonstration. government troops did respond by opening fire, we're told. activists say the troops killed at least five people. local sources report that the government has stopped the heavy shelling but tanks and troops are said to be staying put in the areas where the opposition has been the most active. the united nations estimate that syrian troops have killed more than 9,000 of their own people since the uprising began last march. the president released his tax returns today. turns out he pays a lower rate than his secretary. just like the billionaire warren buffet. the president has been pushing for the buffet rule to change that. republican rules are fighting it calling it a job killing tax hike. the white house says the

president made almost $800,000 last year and paid a rate of about 20%. officials say his secretary made $95,000 and paid a slightly higher tax rate. they're not telling us exactly how much. in 2010, mitt romney earned more than $20 million. and paid a rate of just less than 14%. his tax returns have not been completed, he reports, for this year or for 2011 but he said he will give us the tax results once they're filed. today, he announced he's filed for an extension. ed henry is live at the white house tonight. ed, the president actually wouldn't qualify for the buffet rule, right? he didn't make enough money. >> that's right. last year, he would have in 2010, the last tax year he filed, he made over a million dollars. that's the line under the president's plans that you would pay a minimum tax of 30% if you make over a million dollars. he didn't do that in 2011. nonetheless, the president is willing to pay his fair share. they note that he's pushed for an end to the bush tax cuts for the rich, for example, which means he would pay more and they

also say this whole situation with the president's own secretary makes their point. that it's unfair for someone's secretary to pay a higher tax rate than the principle in this case, the president. meanwhile, independent analysts told us today this could be problematic for the president to pay a rate of 20.5% and he's still making a lot of money. >> relative to romney, the president isn't making that much but sure, relative to the majority of americans, the obamas would be considered wealthy and they have to make sure that they are not -- that they're still in touch or try to show that they're in touch with the average american. but the obama campaign in chicago noting tonight the president and vice president have now released tax returns not just for 2011 but going back to 2000 and they're saying they want mitt romney to do the same. for more than a decade of returns to see what he has paid in terms of his tax rate. >> shepard: mitt romney has released 2010 already and as

i've reported, he's filed for an extension on 2011. >> that's right. we've got that document that he's filed. we have that tonight. interesting because he's now saying he will officially file this return and make it public at some point in the next six months. that could be politically dangerous, obviously, that could mean he releases it in september or october and if there's embarrassing in there, that's a lot closer to the election. in the whole question whether he'll release returns going back a decade or more, the romney campaign fired back today, it was a distraction by the obama camp saying -- "it's no surprise with the worst job creation record in modern history that president obama will try to distract americans from the real issues with a series of side shows." nonetheless, i can tell you right out, obama campaign officials in chicago tell me this is not a side show. they believe the fact that the president has been out there on the stump pushing to change this tax system while mitt romney has not been and has not been in support of the buffet rule. they think that's a big difference and they're going to take that to the voters in november.

he says that he carried her on his shoulders through the smoke and the flames as burning embers fell from the ceiling. imagine that. the newark mayor is cory booker, he says he's no hero. says he was terrified and called it his come to jesus moment. >> very scary situation. once you're in, getting out, those are moments that i had conversations with god that i never had before and feel very, very blessed today. i feel really grateful. i want to kiss and hug a lot of folks that i'm still here and she made it out. >> shepard: mayor cory booker says he has a greater respect for firefighters and that he needed a nap. both he and the woman he saved had second-degree burns. we're told she is in the hospital now listed as stable. her mother says cory booker is a supermayor! extreme weather alert. and what forecasters warn could be a life-threatening weekend

has already started. weather service officials confirm a twister touched down in oklahoma just south of oklahoma city. local television station reports that some damage has happened to homes and businesses. here's the deal. forecasters say violent weather will threaten much of the nation's midsection. see the area here tomorrow stretching from texas to minnesota. the worst of it is expected in the afternoon on saturday in parts of oklahoma and kansas most at risk. updates throughout the weekend here on f.n.c. two of the spots where the levees failed after hurricane katrina could become national historic landmarks. a group which supports that idea reports it's now asking the national park service to add the area to its national registry of historic places. the folks who live there don't agree. not all of them anyway. about commemorating the disaster. >> it's going on seven years. we're trying to move on and get over it. >> shepard: valerie snyder rebuilt her house in the lower ninth ward but few of her neighbors have followed her

has accused the former assistant coach of the syracuse university basketball team of molesting him says he made it up. all of it. as you'll recall last year, the accuser claimed bernie fine sexually assaulted him while on a trip with the team. according to the reporting of the associated press, the accuser now claims he is a habitual leader. he's also about to begin serving more than three years in prison for molesting a 13-year-old boy himself. bernie fine's accuser claims this man, one of the other accusers put him up to it. prosecutors recently dropped charges against fine. they said too much time had passed since the crimes those accusers claim he committed. is the move to fire me? that's one of the last text messages from the university of arkansas football coach in order to keep his job. they fired him days later for lying about his nasty motorcycle

crash. it turned out the married father of four was riding with his 25-year-old ex-mistress whom he'd hired days earlier. multiple sources report he's engaged to another university staffer or she is, i should say. according to documents, the pair exchanged more than 4,000 text messages just since september. those messages are no longer on the phone, we're told but we're seeing the frantic texts he sent his co-workers as the story began falling apart. rick leventhal has those and he's live with us, arkansas' athletic director says he gave his former mistress $20,000 in cash and now we're learning where that money went? >> according to petrino's termination letter, the mistress used the 20 grand to buy a black acura the week she started working for football program. she's now on paid administrative leave. there's no sign of the thousands of texts these two apparently exchanged. the coach may have deleted them

all and any photos and videos the two shared. in a back and forth with someone identified as andy, petrino asks, andy, can they get context off my text? in a legal case, maybe. in this case, they can only get who you text, not the subject. he had a relationship with this woman for seven months and we don't know she's going to be married in june as she was scheduled to be. >> shepard: yeah, we know he's not trying to get the job back at arkansas. >> no appeal, according to the agent and the university, he will not try to get his job back. he is accepting responsibility for the events that led to his firing but in the text messages we covered, as you mentioned, he was practically begging not to get fired. he wrote his boss. let me know if we need to get together again. i'm at your disposal and we'll do whatever it takes to keep you in my camp and remain your coach. and the termination letter, the athletic director says pettrino's conduct was unacceptable and negatively affected the reputation of the university. >> shepard: rick leventhal, thanks. >> sure. >> shepard: the presumptive republican presidential nominee

mitt romney spoke today at a national rifle association event. that's the same group that mitt romney says he didn't "line up with" during a previous run for the senate. his now position ahead. plus the florida judge overseeing the second-degree murder case against george zimmerman today said she may have a conflict of interest. that's the story of the unarmed florida teen whom this man admits he shot and killed. so what happens to the judge? that as we approach the bottom of the hour and the top of the news on "fox report." >> shepard: seems like most everybody is guilty of snatching an occasional towel or a bottle of shampoo from a hotel room. cops in florida say one guest has raised the bar. surveillance pictures from this place in tampa showing a woman here stealing a pitcher frame, curtains, rod and all and even an old school television set. looks heavy, doesn't it? police say she also stole a bedspread and some rugs all worth a grand total of $700. the hillsborough county sheriff asking the public for help identifying the woman in these pictures. we've all been victim to the occasional pocket dial, right? that can be embarrassing on occasion. now cops say a suspected car thief gave himself up when his phone accidentally called the 911 while he was talking about stealing cars. listen.

of world war ii style prisons in which starvation is said to be rampant and execution the norm. forced labor camps where generations of north korean prisoners waste away for the so-called political crimes of just one family member. information from inside these camps is very hard to come by because escape is almost impossible. almost. jennifer griffin is at the pentagon tonight with more on this and jennifer, it's my understanding you've spoken with only three people known to escape from these prisons. >> shep, to understand north korea, you have to nld its gulag system. 200,000 prisoners held in these concentration death camps. only three people are known to have ever escaped these camps. we spoke with one of them. and his name is shin duck-shuck, he climbed over the back of another prisoner to escape five

years ago. his friend was electrocuted on the fence. he described how he turned in his mother and brother when he found out they were trying to escape. i was 14 years old when my mother and brother were publicly executed but i felt no emotion. rather, i felt relief that i was the one -- i was not the one that was tied to the wooden stake while being executed. that's what i felt at that time. >> author blaine harden has detailed his extraordinary escape in a new back exposing conditions in the modern day concentration camps, how guards use starvation to control the prisoners. >> as i was walking on the ground, i saw two pieces of -- two kernels of corn, that was in the cow dung that was on the ground. so without giving it much thought, i plucked the two

kernels of corn and whatever way i could wash it and clean it up, i did. i ate that because i was so hungry. >> he grew up without emotion. he grew up being raised by guards. he was always hungry. and everything he did was to position himself so he could get more food. he was -- his parents were chosen for him by the guards as a result of a reward marriage. and he was raised by the guards, not by his parents to be a kind of farm animal. >> north koreans don't punish political dissidents themselves. they punish relatives. three generations later. that's how they control their population. through fear. shepard? >> shepard: jennifer griffin at the pentagon tonight. thanks. diplomats are working to try to solve the nuclear stand-off with iran. leaders from iran, the united states and five other major world powers to meet in turkey tomorrow to restart talks over iran's nuclear program.

the united states and others have essentially cut off the iranian economy from the rest of the world over concerns that they're developing a nuclear weapon. europe is set to ban iranian oil imports beginning this july. but diplomats involved in the new talks say there is hope for a positive outcome. meanwhile, reuters news agency is reporting that iran has disabled tracking systems aboard its oil tanker fleet in an attempt to mask how much crude it's selling amid major export bans. mitt romney is accusing president obama of an assault on our freedoms. the presumptive republican presidential nominee spoke at the national rifle association's annual convention today in st. louis. back in the 1990's, though, mitt romney said "i don't line up with the nra." of course, there was a different audience then. it was in massachusetts. but he's now a lifetime member! >> it's time to elect a president who will defend the rights president obama ignores or minimizes.

and i will protect the second amendment rights of american people. >> president obama has called for commonsense measures that protect the second amendment rights of law-abiding citizens and improve public safety by keeping guns out of the hands of those who should not have them under existing laws. >> shepard: but former massachusetts governor mitt romney didn't just go after the president on gun rights. carl cameron is in d.c. what else did he have to say, carl? >> well, listen, this is his first big speech as the republican standard bearer now that rick santorum has withdrawn from the race. so he was debuting general election themes that he'll use all the way through november. essentially, mr. romney will be accusing the president of undermining and/or restricting the u.s. constitution and liberty. romney said the president is waging an assault on freedom of religion with a whole host of regulations and restrictions that go along with obamacare. he accused the president of undermining economic freedom with taxes which he said basically undermined that and personal liberty and that was a

bit about the second amendment. romney made it very clear not withstanding his assertion that he supported massachusetts' gun laws and wouldn't change them as president of the united states, he said he'll do much more to protect the second amendment than barack obama ever did. >> shepard: the word is that rick santorum and newt gingrich were there. >> they did. rick santorum though he dropped out of the race, you don't want to give an opportunity to speak to the nra when you're a nationally recognized republican and don't want to mess up their program by being a no show. he did give his speech. as did newt gingrich. gingrich who is still in the race had a very interesting promise. he says if he becomes president, he will put forth what he calls the gingrich treaty, a resolution to the united nations that would take the right to bear arms, the u.s. second amendment and make it global. so that all the world's peoples could have the right to bear arms. pretty bold proposal for a candidate who is very far back, not likely to win the nomination. almost impossible and just as unlikely to become president. >> shepard: carl cameron live in washington, thank you.

ann romney also spoke at the nra today. she's mitt romney's wife and she responded again to the democratic strategist and cnn contributor hillary rosen. as you have no doubt heard, hillary rosen said ann romney "never worked a day in her life." ann romney has now said she did plenty of work as a mom raising five boys. >> let me give a shoutout to all moms that are working. and by the way, to all dads that are working. we love all of you. >> shepard: a gift this issue is from the democrats to the republicans. hillary rosen has since apologized for that comment. the florida judge who is overseeing the case against trayvon martin's shooter says she may have a conflict of interest. the shooter is george zimmerman. he's charged with second-degree murder. the dead teenager is that central florida teenager about whom you've heard so much. the judge says her husband works

if you have a hands free. and you can forget about downloading music on your ipod. jonathan sierry live in chapel hill tonight. even the police chief says this law will be mighty hard to enforce. >> for one thing, police can only ticket you for talking on the cell phone. if they've already pulled you over for some other traffic offense such as speeding or running a red light. but town officials say their primary intent is to generate awareness about the dangers of cell phone use while driving. >> this is not really an ordinance to write tickets for people. it's an education campaign that we're putting forth. >> but some residents who work out of their vehicles fear the new ordinance will hurt business. they say by the time it takes to pull off the road, park and answer the phone, many perspective customers will have moved on to a competitor in a town without a ban.
